This cotton which, because of its colour, is of an inferior quality is largely obtained in the bends of the Mississippi and its tributaries. It is not grown intentionally, but its dark colour is supposed to be caused by soil and weather conditions. The crop varies from about 10,000 bales one season up to 15,000 another season. The cotton is difficult to bleach, and, if mixed with other American types, will show streaky in the cloth when bleached.

Sudan. The Sudan is considered by many experts to be by far the most hopeful cotton growing area within the Empire. With an area almost half that of India, large tracts are available and suitable for cotton growing. These vary from the high rainfall area of Southern Sudan, where American cotton can be grown, to the large Gezira lying between the Blue and White Niles, suitable for growing Egyptian cotton by irrigation.

A term applied to plain weave fabrics made in Madras, of linen warp and cotton weft or silk warp and cotton weft. It is not used today.

A light-weight cotton muslin, woven from blue and white printed yarns in plain weave. The small white spots on the blue ground gave a mottled effect; made about 72 X 72 per inch, 60's/60's yams.

A plain weave cotton cloth, shipped to West and East Africa, in 27-in. or 28-in. widths. About 56 X 52 per inch, 18's/20's, plain weave, blue dyed (see Baffetas)

An American term formerly used for cotton fabrics in blue colours and included dungarees, denims, nurse cloths, gingham stripes and checks.

A term denoting cotton which is neither too white nor too creamy, something between the two, though good colour to the buyer depends upon his requirements. When cotton is too creamy it is termed " buttery," when it is too white, it is described as " blue."

The real foulard is a light weight all-silk 2 & 2 twill fabric, printed with blue or black spots on a white ground. Cotton foulards to imitate the silk kind are made from super quality yarns and printed in similar styles; usually plain weave. Standard qualities are: - Silk, 120 ends and 140 picks per inch, 40 denier warp, 90 denier weft. Cotton, 112 ends and 128 picks per inch, 140's T., 140's W. A warp satin cloth is also sold as a foulard, but in finer quality, viz., 148 ends and 72 picks per inch, 60's T., 60's W., and 186 ends and 90 picks per inch, 50's T., 60's W., all Egyptian cotton yarns, and printed in blue discharge designs.

(1) - A loin cloth generally in a check design from 2 yards to 9¹/₂ yards long by 29-in. to 44-in. wide, woven from ordinary as well as mercerised cotton and sometimes from an admixture of cotton yarn with silk, rayon and mercerised cotton yarn. Worn by Mohammedans. Made on hand looms by native labour (2) - A favourite head-dress with a large part of the population in the Punjab as well as the North-west Frontier Province. It is woven in plain white, or in check and "Chini" designs mostly on primitive looms from mill_ made yarn of 20's to 40's counts. The first two varieties are used by almost all classes, especially among Hindus, while the latter called " chini " (woven with blue and white ends in alternate order) is precerred by the Mohammedans. The chief districts of production are Hoshiarpur, Jullundur, Ludhiana, Sialkot and Amritsar. Many varieties are made, each differing in some particular. The best known are as follows: - Lungi Amirana has gold thread borders. Lungi Battala, the body of the cloth is in red checks. Lungi Chaugarri has two-colour check designs. Lungi Chautani, the warp has four colour stripes, red, green, yellow and white. Lungi Chirwin has a white ground with single colour picks at intervals. Lungi Fakiri has a grey ground with single colour picks, yellow and white. Lungi Manjha has dark and light blue checks. Lungi Sated is plain white. Lungi Safed Kinaradar has a white ground and coloured border. Lungi Tirkandi has three colours in warp and weft. Lungi Tirtani has three colours in warp in three bars, red, green, yellow.

Originated in India as bright coloured handkerchiefs of silk and cotton with spots in white and coloured grounds, chiefly red and blue. The silk styles were made of the finest quality yarns, and were very popular. Bandanna prints for clothing were first produced in Glasgow from cotton yarns, and are now made in many qualities. The term, at present generally means a fabric in printed styles, whether silk, silk and cotton or all cotton. A cheap Bandanna print is made 64 X 68, 34's/36's. This is actually a brassiere cloth, but woven about 18-in. wide, with a broad selvedge as illustrated. The warping is two threads cotton and one thread rubber covered with a fine cotton thread. The take-up of the cotton ends is 100 per cent. Coarse rayon coloured weft is used, generally pink, but cream and pale blue are sometimes seen. One quality has 30 ends 2/24's cotton and 15 ends of rubber per inch, with 50 picks of 450 denier rayon. Dobby effects are used for figuring

A loin cloth native woven on hand looms in Burma, and worn by men and women. They are in many designs and qualities and all are about 34-in. to 36-in. wide and 72-in. long. Various names are given to the cloths according to the design. Such as Akwet, Bala, etc.; also see Lungi (1) ———————— The shoulder or upper cloth worn by males in India. More strictly this is worn by Mohammedans and the Dhootie and Dhotee by Hindus. The cloth is of silk and cotton with gold thread embroidery at times. Made at Tatta, in Suidh, and other parts of India (see Lungi). The Indian cloth is generally 23-in. finished width and 4¹/₂ yards long. The natives cut a length into two, and stitch the two pieces together side by side. The African style is 32-in. to 40-in. wide and of several lengths from 2 yard upwards. Made about 64 ends and 56 picks per inch, 32's T., 38's W., cotton. The borders have usually double the number of ends per inch, and in this cloth there will be 112 ends per inch in the border. All styles are checks, rather broad in design and of several colours, with a broad border at one selvedge. The border is all one colour and the yarns are crammed in the reed. The cloth is used for men's dress. The loongyes made for Mohammedan use are made from 29-in. to 44-in. wide and 2 yard to 9¹/₂ yards long. Mercerised cotton, rayon and cotton and silk mixtures are used in the better qualities. The cheaper cloths are cut into two parts by the natives and stitched side by side. When borders are required they are made in colour. Loongyes are also used as a head-dress in the Punjab and other parts of India and native woven from fine yarns. A special " Chini " style is made from alternate blue and white yarn for Mohammedan use.
